When it comes to natural materials with heritage, few can rival wool. At MELUSA, we choose fibers that are as functional as they are beautiful—and wool has earned its place with centuries of warmth, durability, and comfort. It’s nature’s performance fiber, spun straight from the hillside.
A Short History of Wool
Wool has been woven into human history for over 10,000 years. Early civilizations in Mesopotamia, Europe, and the Middle East relied on sheep not just for food, but for their fleece—a renewable, insulating gift that made life in colder climates possible.
As time passed, wool became a pillar of trade, fashion, and culture. From the refined Merino coats of Spanish royalty to the hand-knit sweaters of Irish fishermen, wool has always adapted to the needs of its wearers, while staying true to its natural roots.
From Sheep to Sock: The Wool Fiber Process
1. Shearing
Once a year, typically in spring, sheep are gently sheared to remove their fleece. This is a humane and necessary process that keeps the animals healthy and comfortable.
2. Cleaning and Scouring
The raw fleece—called "greasy wool"—is full of natural oils like lanolin, as well as dirt and debris. It’s carefully washed (or “scoured”) in warm water to clean the fibers while preserving their natural resilience.
3. Carding and Spinning
Once dry, the wool is carded to untangle and align the fibers. This creates a soft, airy web that’s ready for spinning into yarn. Different spinning techniques can produce thick, cozy yarns or fine, breathable ones.
4. Knitting and Finishing
The yarn is dyed, if desired, and knit into garments like our cozy wool socks. After knitting, wool pieces are often gently "fulled" or pre-shrunk, making them softer and more shape-retaining over time.
Why We Chose Wool
Wool is naturally insulating, odor-resistant, and moisture-wicking. It keeps you warm when it’s cold, and surprisingly cool when it’s warm. And because it’s 100% biodegradable and renewable, it’s a material that feels as good for the planet as it does on your skin.
At MELUSA, we love wool for its story, its strength, and its softness. Our wool socks bring together comfort, breathability, and time-tested tradition—woven with care for both you and the earth.
