From Mountain Goat to Cozy Luxury: The Journey of Cashmere Fiber

In a world that’s growing more mindful about sustainability and material origins, natural fibers like cashmere stand out—not just for their softness, but for their story. At MELUSA, we’re drawn to materials that come from nature, carry centuries of tradition, and bring unmatched comfort. Cashmere is all that and more.

A Short History of Cashmere

Cashmere has been treasured for over a thousand years. Its roots trace back to the high plateaus of Mongolia, Nepal, and Kashmir (from which it gets its name). Historically, it was a fiber reserved for royalty and nobility in Persia and Europe, due to its rarity and supreme softness.

The cashmere goat, also known as the Capra hircus, thrives in cold, mountainous regions. To survive harsh winters, these goats grow a thick double fleece—an outer coat that’s coarse and protective, and a fine, soft undercoat that provides insulation. It's this undercoat that becomes the cashmere we know and love.

From Goat to Sock: The Cashmere Process

1. Combing and Collection
In early spring, as the weather warms, herders hand-comb the goats to gently collect the soft undercoat. This method is preferred over shearing because it yields longer, higher-quality fibers without damaging the coat.

2. Sorting and Cleaning
The raw fibers are sorted to separate the coarse guard hairs from the soft undercoat. The undercoat is then washed to remove dirt, grease, and natural oils, leaving behind pure, clean cashmere.

3. De-Hairing and Spinning
The cleaned fibers go through a de-hairing process, where remaining coarse hairs are removed. What’s left is the prized ultra-soft fiber, which is then spun into yarn. This yarn is incredibly fine, lightweight, yet strong.

4. Knitting and Finishing
The yarn is dyed with eco-friendly pigments (or left undyed for a natural look) and then knitted into garments like scarves, sweaters—or our favorite—cashmere socks. After knitting, each item is washed and lightly finished to enhance its softness and drape.

Why We Chose Cashmere

Cashmere isn’t just a luxury—it’s a commitment to nature, heritage, and comfort. At our brand, we value materials that feel good and do good. Cashmere is biodegradable, renewable, and requires no synthetic processing. And above all, its buttery-soft texture offers an experience of warmth and elegance that no artificial fabric can replicate.

When you wear our cashmere socks, you’re not just wrapping your feet in softness—you’re stepping into a story that began on a snowy mountainside, carried through generations of craftsmanship, and now lives on through consciously made comfort.
