How to Maintain Cashmere Garments

Cashmere is a delicate and luxurious fabric that requires special care to maintain its softness and longevity. Here is a guide on how to take care of your beloved MELUSA cashmere products.

What is Cashmere?

Cashmere is a natural fiber obtained from the soft undercoat of cashmere goats, primarily found in Central Asia. Known for its exceptional warmth, lightweight feel, and luxurious softness, cashmere is a highly prized material used in premium clothing and accessories. However, due to its delicate nature, proper care is essential to maintain its quality and longevity.

How Often Should You Wash Cashmere?

Unlike everyday fabrics, cashmere does not need to be washed after every wear. Overwashing can weaken the fibers and reduce its softness. Instead, follow these general guidelines:

  1. Scarves – Wash every few weeks or as needed, especially if exposed to perfumes, sweat, or dirt.
  2. Socks – Since they come into direct contact with your skin, wash them after 2–3 wears to maintain hygiene and freshness.
  3. Sweaters or other garments – Wash after 5–7 wears unless stained or exposed to strong odors.
  4. Spot Clean When Possible – Instead of full washes, use a damp cloth and mild detergent to treat small stains.

Hand Washing Cashmere

Hand washing is the safest and most recommended method for cleaning cashmere items. Follow these simple steps:

  1. Prepare the Water – Fill a basin with cold water. Avoid warm or hot water, as it can shrink or damage the fibers.
  2. Add a Mild Detergent – Use a small amount of gentle detergent, such as baby shampoo or a cashmere-specific cleanser.
  3. Submerge and Soak – Place the cashmere scarf or socks in the water and gently swirl them around to distribute the detergent evenly. Let them soak for about 15 minutes.
  4. Rinse Thoroughly – Drain the soapy water and refill the basin with clean, cold water. Rinse the cashmere thoroughly until all detergent is removed.
  5. Press Out Excess Water – Avoid wringing or twisting the fabric. Instead, gently press the water out using your hands or by rolling the item in a clean towel.

Machine Washing Cashmere

If you prefer machine washing, follow these precautions to prevent damage:

  1. Use a Mesh Laundry Bag – Placing cashmere items in a protective mesh bag reduces friction and stretching.
  2. Select a Delicate Wash Cycle – Choose the delicate or wool cycle on your washing machine.
  3. Use Cold Water and Gentle Detergent – Hot water can shrink and ruin cashmere. Stick to cold water and use a detergent formulated for delicate fabrics.
  4. Set Spin to Low or None – High-speed spins can stretch and distort cashmere fibers. Opt for a low or no-spin setting.

Drying Cashmere the Right Way

Improper drying can ruin the texture and shape of your cashmere items. Follow these steps for best results:

  1. Lay Flat to Dry – Never hang cashmere, as it can stretch out of shape. Instead, lay the item flat on a clean, dry towel.
  2. Reshape Gently – Adjust the fabric to its original shape before leaving it to dry.
  3. Avoid Heat and Ironing – Do not place cashmere in direct sunlight, on a radiator, or use an iron, as heat can damage the delicate fibers.

Storing Cashmere Garments

Proper storage is key to preserving the quality of your cashmere items when they are not in use:

  1. Clean Before Storing – Always wash cashmere items before storing them to prevent moth damage and stains from setting.
  2. Fold, Don’t Hang – Hanging cashmere can cause it to stretch out of shape. Instead, fold your garments neatly.
  3. Store in a Breathable Bag – Use a cotton garment bag or a breathable storage container to protect cashmere from dust and pests.
  4. Use Natural Moth Repellents – Place lavender sachets or cedar blocks in your storage space to deter moths without using harsh chemicals.
